Neurodegeneration is a hallmark of aging, but its molecular causes remain a mistery. Protein synthesis is the most important of all biological processes, but it is not optimized for aging brains. Lluis posits that errors in protein synthesis accumulate in our bodies because certain chemicals in our environment slowly infiltrate our proteins throughout our lives. If this idea is true, simple solutions may exist to help prevent brain disease.

Lluís Ribas de Pouplana és llicenciat en Biologia per la Universitat de Barcelona (1988) i doctor en Bioquímica per la Universitat d’Edimburg.

Després de finalitzar els seus estudis de doctorat, va iniciar l’etapa postdoctoral al Departament de Biologia del Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (1993-1997), a Cambridge (EUA). De Cambridge es va traslladar, encara en Estats Units, a San Diego, on es va incorporar com a investigador científic i, el 2001, va obtenir una posició d’assistent de Biologia molecular en el Scripps Research Institute. Al juny de 2003, va acceptar una posició d’investigador ICREA de la Generalitat de Catalunya i es va convertir en investigador principal a l’Institut de Recerca Biomèdica (IRB Barcelona), on dirigeix ​​el Laboratori de Traducció Genètica.
