As a graphic designer, Laila Cassim sheds light to the communicative essence of design. By introducing her experience at a sheltered workshop, she illustrates how empowering visual expressions can be, for those who are otherwise marginalized.

デザイナー・研究者。東京大学先端科学技術研究センター特任助教。東京藝術大学で博士課程を取得後、デザインの力で社会をよりよくしたいという信念のもと、福祉と教育の世界で活躍している。現職と共に、知的障がいを持つ成人の利用者が通う、総合福祉障がい者施設「綾瀬ひまわり園」にて定期的にアート講師をし、利用者のアートを活用し、利用者の社会参加と経済自立につながるアート作品の制作と商品づくりの開発に取り組んでいる。

Laila Cassim aims to solve challenging social situations through the power of design. Through design, she collaborates with sheltered workshops both in Japan and abroad to help them establish financial independence and social empowerment. She earned her Ph.D from the Tokyo University of the Arts and is currently a research associate at the University of Tokyo Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology.
