Beginning in 1993 Rick led a seven year research literature review to challenge the youth at risk paradigm. His findings have revolutionized the understanding of child and youth development and have been embraced by education, juvenile justice, law enforcement, and child welfare.

Rick has spent 48 years in the field of child and youth development as a practitioner, researcher, teacher, public policy expert, and author.
