What if a single idea has caused most of the pain and violence in the world? “Power Corrupts” may rank among the most frequently repeated phrases in history. Hidden within is an assumption that has fostered a common belief, held for centuries. This belief fuels pandemic power struggle. Once illuminated, it offers us a different understanding of power. Changes in four small, but crucial, elements can deeply impact the way we talk to each other, enabling us to take the "war out of our words.” Current scientific research, including the study of epigenetics, lends substantial support to the idea that we can change—as individuals and as a society—much faster than we ever imagined. Specific skills and stories clarify how we can defuse defensiveness even in high conflict situations, often instantly, empowering us to heal old hurts, to gain confidence and competence, and to strengthen our relationships—one sentence at a time.
