Purnell is the CEO of Teach The World Online, a charitable organization that offers free education via Skype to students around the world who benefit from English language lessons taught by American volunteer teachers. Purnell travels regularly between Haiti and other countries where he trains indigenous teachers and set up new internet schools. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Christopher Purnell Foundation, which performs a variety of charitable endeavors in the Himalayan region of Nepal. He is a graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, and has worked as director of student programs at Christ School, a preparatory boys school, in Asheville. Website: www.teachtheworldonline.org In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
