It has been 33 years since the finding of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A growing population of 35 million is actually infected. This talk explores the challenges that influence a vaccine development to avoid infection, and discuss solutions in the scientific field in which Puerto Rico plays a significant role.

Hace 33 años se descubrió el virus de inmunodeficiencia humana. Hay sobre 35 millones de personas infectadas actualmente en el mundo. Esta charla explora los retos que implican el desarrollo de una vacuna para evitar la infección y discute las nuevas esperanzas en este campo científico, en el que Puerto Rico juega un papel importante.

Dr. Baerga has a degree in Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus and a MS and PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, San Diego. He did postdoctoral studies in Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Cambridge in England. Since 2007, he has been a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine.
